Hollywood cinema, in particular, treats the camera as though it were male. It was published in and is one of the most widely cited and anthologized though certainly not one of the most accessible articles in the whole of contemporary film theory.
Whether a Hollywood protagonist can be female with stereotypically female characteristics is a question for another day. However, this steadily becomes less apparent as the music video goes on, and the artist is often shown with a confident expression from then on.
